Unit 5: Poultry Production and Financial Analysis
Students enrolled in this subject will tie together what they have learnt in earlier Units through discussion of real-life cases and carefully selected readings. Financial analysis of disease investigations and management break-downs on the farm, in the hatchery and the processing plant will be discussed to consolidate your understanding in avian medicine.
Class Activities
This subject involves a combination of reading articles, spreadsheet exercises, online quizzes and class discussions.
Learning Objectives
- Develop a sound understanding of practical economics of achieving profitable poultry production with poultry flocks (breeder, layer and broiler production). Compare the aims of optimal performance versus least cost of production.
- Cost of Welfare e.g. alternative systems versus cage layer systems.
- Production costs versus retail selling prices.
- Develop the skills needed to analyse the financial implications of veterinary decisions in relation to production scenarios and evaluate the economics of implementing disease preventative measures versus the cost of a disease in a flock.
- Gain communication experience through group simulation in the 'selling' of disease prevention and health management programs to management.
Assessment
Assessment is based on your performance in Monthly Assessment Tests, assignments and class discussions. The final examination is held in week 16 and is a three-hour written and online exam. You will be required to identify a University near you where you can be supervised when sitting the exam.
